Dear Alumni and Friends of Calhoun,
As most of you know, the Calhoun Experimental Station is closing this summer and some 400 acres of land will revert back to the Ouachita Parish Police Jury (OPPJ).  We need the input and feedback of Calhoun folks--past and present--so that the best ideas are presented to the OPPJ.
The Police Jury will probably decide what becomes of the property sometime in the next few months.  Already, several people have gone before the OPPJ to propose ideas.  Obviously, the OPPJ will most easily be swayed toward a commercial venture that will bring in revenue for the Parish.  While no one would oppose new jobs, we need to think about what we want in our community, what we don't, and what will have the best impact on Calhoun.  If we can demonstrate to the OPPJ a consensus on the best uses for the land, we have a shot at influencing their decisions for the property.
Here's what we know so far.  The projects proposed or rumored as of now are:  50+ acres for a new Calhoun High School that might in future include some vocational programs; a medical clinic utilizing the new office building on east portion of site with parking area and room to expand, that will include such things as wound care for elderly and facilities for specialty doctors to see patients periodically; a small plot for a butterfly garden, the original office building for a Calhoun area museum, an unknown amount of land for a new subdivision and an industrial park.
We are working with some of the Calhoun Civic Club members and others to incorporate various ideas in order to make a better case to the OPPJ.  We would like to have the thinking and consensus of the broader community.  To that end, we are asking you to share your thoughts on the best uses of the property.  We tentatively will meet with the OPPJ in early September when we would present our ideas to them, with a site plan drawing.  Let's use the Internet (email and Facebook) to exchange ideas and discuss their merits so that we can make the best possible case to the Police Jury.
Talk to us about Calhoun!
